The split at the end of the day was 58% Obama and 42% Hillary. The woman in front of me kept shouting "democrat" after each time people shouted the names of candidates.
The Democratic Transition and Crime in South Africa
This is another English language video. Why is crime in South Africa so high? To answer this question we must first look at when crime began its meteoric rise. There is a perception among certain South Africans that crime in South Africa began to increase from 1994 onwards following the political transition. In fact crime began rising well before that. In the decade from 1980 to 1990 serious offences rose by 22 per cent, and less serious ones by 17 per cent; murders increased by 32 per cent, rape by 24 per cent, and burglary by 31 per cent. Recorded levels of almost all crime showed absolute increases for the period 1990 to 1994. While the murder rate declined by 7 per cent, in line with declining levels of political violence (from 16 042 fatalities in 1990 to 14 920 in 1994), other crimes increased phenomenally during this period: assault increased by 18 per cent, rape by 42 per cent, robbery by 40 per cent, vehicle theft by 34 per cent, and burglary by 20 per cent. If you do the math: 16,042 murders in 1990 = 32% increase over 1980, then in 1980 there were 12,153 murders in 1980. The population of South Africa in 1980 was 24 million. That means in 1980 there was a homicide rate of 50.6 per 100,000. Before this, in the 1970s the homicide rate would have been either equally high or it would have been increasing from a lower rate. Either way we can see that South Africa has always had high levels of violence and that this is not a recent phenomenon, contrary to the claims of some. In 1994 there was a murder rate of 66.9 per 100,000. In 2007 the murder rate had fallen to 40.5 per 100,000 (19,202 homicides versus over 48 million people). What would have caused crime to be so high and increasing in the 1970s and 1980s? The restrictions the government in the 1960s imposed on the employment of black labour on the Witwatersrand and other growth points encouraged employers to mechanise. This created a serious unemployment problem among blacks. In the 1970s there were numerous strikes by black and coloured workers for higher wages. Because trade union activity was heavily restricted, employers had to deal with leaderless strikers. As this became increasingly burdensome for them, business leaders pressured the government to allow blacks and coloureds to organise into unions and join the formal wage-bargaining system. By 1979 all restrictions on black and coloured union activity had been lifted. Employers from the late 1970s onward began giving wage increases higher than the inflation rate and cutting jobs to maintain their profit levels. Since the South African economy experienced a series of difficulties and recessions from 1976 -- 1994, employment fell significantly during this period. In the 1960s, 97% of blacks entering the job market could expect to find employment. This declined to 72% in the 1970s and to a mere 7% in the late 1980s. The increase in crime in South Africa occurred at the same time that the economy was stagnating or contracting, and unemployment was rising. Could this be related? In recent years, illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe, Congo, Angola, Mozambique, and Nigeria have flooded into South Africa adding to the problems of crowding in townships and squatter settlements, and unemployment. Since those illegal immigrants don't have skills, they can't find work. So what do they do while they are in South Africa?
