Tampa Bay Officer Dragged by Car During Traffic Stop
Tampa, Florida — A Tampa Police officer escaped serious injury after a traffic stop late Sunday night. It all started when the police responded to a suspicious vehicle call. Officers pulled over the white 1994 Corvette near the intersection of Rome Avenue and North B Street. One officer was running the suspect's information through the computer inside the cruiser, while the other, Officer Kiet Truong stood by the suspect vehicle's driver-side window. Authorities say the driver of the Corvette, 42-year-old Legrand Pratt, grabbed the keys and pulled away. Truong attempted to stop Pratt, was caught in the door and dragged four blocks before he freed himself at Armenia Avenue. The pursuit ensued and officers chased the Corvette through Tampa. One officer used a "pit-maneuver," forcing the suspect's car to crash into a light-pole near Raymond James Stadium on Himes Avenue and West Braddock Street. A police cruiser also lost control. Officer Truong was taken to a hospital for treatment. He has road rash and a gash on his head. He is resting at home. The Corvette is listed as stolen from South Carolina. Pratt has a warrant out of South Carolina. Pratt faces a number of charges including: attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing to elude, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.
